Pigskin Pulpit: A Social History of Texas High School Football Coaches
Published in Hardcover by Texas State Historical Assn (September, 1998)
Authors: Ty Cashion and O. A. Phillips
Average review score:

I Thought This Was Supposed to be a History Book?
Aren't history books supposed to be dull as dishwater? I gave this book to my 80+ year-old Father for Christmas. He really enjoyed it! So did I, for that matter. Dr. Cashion must have spend untold hours interviewing old-time Texas High School football coaches and those who played under them. This book is as close to listening to those old timers as the written word can be. Growing up in football crazy Garland, Texas (back-to-back state championships in the 1960's under Chuck Curtis), I remember as a child "high school football fever." This hits the mark, or should I say is a "two point conversion."

Pioneer of Tropical Landscape Architecture: William Lyman Phillips in Florida
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Florida (October, 1997)
Author: Faith Reyher Jackson
Average review score:

A Review of a Book by Faith Reyher Jackson
Finally, thirty four years after the passing of one of the most important figures in the development of landscape architecture. A fine book detailing the life of this great man has surfaced. The book is titled "pioneer of tropical landscape architecture" by faith reyher jackson, published by the university press of florida. The book is a masterpiece in its detailed treatment of not only the man but the deep imprint that he left on the florida scene in the 20th century. William lyman phillips was a genius but his overwhelming modesty denied him his rightful place amongst the great landscape architects of his era. Jackson has skillfully and accurately covered all of the remarkable imprints that phillips has left on the florida and panama canal zone scene. As stated in the book overleaf, phillips was the project superintendent of the first wave of florida's civilian conservation corps and later the consultant to the national and county park service. Phillips built all of south florida i s public parks as well as large numbers of private ones. He designed dozens of public housing sites, hospitals, cemeteries, airports, roads, highways, private gardens and college campuses. His masterpiece was fairchild tropical garden. I strongly recommend this book to all those readers who have an interest in the life and achievements of unsung heroes.

Plants for Natural Gardens: Southwestern Native & Adaptive Trees, Shrubs, Wildflowers & Grasses
Published in Paperback by Museum of New Mexico Pr (April, 1995)
Author: Judith Phillips
Average review score:

A Must for Native Gardeners in New Mexico
Judith Phillips books are a godsend to those of us who garden in the high desert. She understands our highly varied zones and which plants thrive in each area. The illustrations and codes are very helpful. I am a public librarian and have bought many copies of her three books for our library and to use at home. Rather than hitting your head against the wall and wasting precious water trying to make something grow that does not belong in your area, Judith helps you create a great garden that will thrive and be relatively low maintenance. Her suggestions on plant combinations are particularly useful. The only criticism I have is one that happened at the printers: the pages in the back of Plants for Native Gardens which lists a chart of adaptive plants are not numbered. I highly recommend all three of Phillips' fine books.

Play it Again, Slam: Pastiches and Parodies
Published in Paperback by Batsford (June, 2003)
Authors: Phillip King and Robert King
Average review score:

better than the movie...
the king's strike back. those wonderfull three parodies brake the boundries of bridge books by being so cleverly funny and witty, you cannot stop laughing from the wonderfull tales in this book. the main parody - "play it again slam" is a pastiche of the greatest movie off all times "casablanca". believe it or not - "play it again slam" is funnier and more clever! the bridge hands themselves don't fall back behind and manage to be clever and intersting even without the help of the wonderfull characters aroud the table. this book is mandatory to bridge lovers who have at list a bit of sense of humor...

Playing Woodwind Instruments: A Guide for Teachers, Performers, and Composers
Published in Paperback by Waveland Press (July, 1998)
Author: Phillip Rehfeldt
Average review score:

Great Woodwind Omnibus
Well done how to for all the woodwinds. Very good section on flute embouchures and clarinet/oboe reed making, or at least a reasonable starting point. Good references for further study of not only playing the woodwind family but reedmaking, and history as well. Great to have this information all in one place. This would be an excellent starting point for someone who already plays one woodwind and wants to expand their "doubling" ability. It would also be an excellent book to accompany a standard method for a first time player of any of these instruments. Hats off to Mr Rehfeldt, good job.

The Politics of Presence
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (November, 1998)
Author: Anne Phillips
Average review score:

Understanding contemporary challenges to democracy
English writer Anne Phillips is among the best feminist political thinkers of our time. In The Politics of Presence, she develops a major issue present in some of her previous books, notably Engendering Democracy and Democracy & Difference: the shift in democratic thought, when the politics of ideas (where the identity of representatives is not a concern) is challenging by a politics of presence. Since Hanna Pitkin's famous attack on what she called "descriptive representation", in the sixties, political theorists usually see the search for typical representation-that is, the parliament as a microcosm or mirror of the whole society-as a minor task. The question was not "who" the representatives are, but "which interests" they defend. Enhancing their accountability was the way to improve democracy. This view was compatible with the hegemonic liberal affirmation of "equality before the law", regardless the individual's identity. And compatible, too, with Socialist analysis, both Marxist and social democrat, that saw political access as dependent on changes in social and economic conditions. As Ms Phillips shows, this view was challenged by an alternative politics of presence, which emerged with the demands for the political inclusion of silenced or excluded groups, specially women and ethnic minorities. These groups don't judge "equality before the law" is enough; and they are not willing to wait for always-postponed structural changes. With such demands for political equality, they focalize on institutional mechanisms that could achieve more immediate change in their life's condition. Thus, political equality is now a crucial issue in political battles. However, this approach to democrat reform is not free of problems, and The Politics of Presence extensively discusses such problems. A mirror legislature gives no certainty about protecting minority's interests; accountability mechanisms can't be dispensed. And more, determining which social cleavages, among countless ones, deserve to be considered in order to promote fair representation is a controversial issue. The book studies a number of cases that illustrate some of these difficulties-electoral quotas for women in Europe, race-conscious districting in the USA, and Canadian politics, emphasizing the problems of Quebec and native population. Clearly written, full of intelligence and passion, The Politics of Presence is a valuable book to anyone who wants to think about contemporary challenges of democracy.
